From product to pavement, we've been taking in new levels of innovation and collaboration at retail across NYC.

We’ve recently been out to the states with clients again, in search of new inspiration. We explored new retail formats, service standards, e-commerce and consumer trends.

Based in the lower Manhattan neighbourhood of Soho, we focussed much of our attention on the villages around NYC.  From Little Italy and the Meatpacking District, through Soho and Noho to Greenwich, we reviewed over 30 different brands and businesses who are strongly performing in their categories.

The five boroughs (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island) make up what we know as New York City, but our main inspiration came from Brooklyn, just over the Hudson.  Founded by the Dutch, their early culture of colonisation has become an enduring feature of Brooklyners. There are over 18 villages in Brooklyn, from Greenpoint to Coney Island and the Flatlands.

Our delight was found in Smorgasburg (a pop-up paradise around the Brooklyn borough of Williamsburg).  Here we saw the true entrepreneurial spirit, collaboration, innovation and enterprise of local brands.

Every weekend, you will find over 100 Vendors from 11 in the morning until six in the evening, on Saturdays, at East River State Park and on Sundays, just around Brooklyn Bridge Park at Pier 5. There’s plenty to see onlinefor those who are bargain-curious.

The set-up is simple and it emanates out onto the Williamsburg waterfront, like a summer rock festival for food: exciting, overwhelming, sweaty, hot. Go once and you’ll want to go more.

It’s this spirit of social enterprise that truly delights in person.  The overwhelming sense of collaboration between consumers and the support for those who have embraced the truly ‘authentic and original’ is extended through strong social content and really delightful digital environments with inspired user-experience.

If you’d like to have a more detailed view of our findings, or the key brands to watch from across the pond get in touch and we’ll bring the bagels.
