A brand new way to read online, with Pelican Books
Pelican, the iconic non-fiction paperback imprint of Penguin Books, launches a website today – www.pelicanbooks.com – which offers a completely new way to read books online.
Aiming to create a flawless digital reading experience, each book in the Pelican series has been designed from the ground up to make the most of the online medium, and to be comfortable to read irrespective of device. The website allows readers to buy and read from pelicanbooks.com in their browser as well as across the full range of smartphones and tablets.
Pelican Books re-launched earlier this year and design has been a clear focus of the entire project. Matthew Young has led the project in-house at Penguin ensuring the imprint’s values of clarity and accessibility are carried seamlessly across print and digital. Penguin worked on the site build with Bristol-based creative design agency Fiasco Design.
The website sees each element of the book re-worked for digital, with footnotes embedded in the text for easy and immediate reference, maps re-drawn in full colour and optimised for the web, and diagrams re-drawn in colour to allow clear communication of the author’s message throughout. In addition, readers can move between devices with ease as their place is bookmarked across desktop, tablet and smartphone.
Young comments, “These books speak the same distinctive visual language as the paperback editions, but have been reimagined for the web, and designed to be easily accessible, clear and easy to interpret, and of course uniquely Pelican.”
