Bristol small business contest selects 50 entrepreneurs to compete for 275,000

Some of Britain's most innovative small business owners have been selected to compete for a share of £275,000 at a 14 hour entrepreneurial extravaganza in Bristol in September.

The Pitch 2013, organised by and sponsored by ICAEW, Constant Contact and, has chosen 50 entrepreneurs to compete at The Pitch Live at Paintworks on 25 September.

Business support worth thousands of pounds will be awarded to one overall winner, while all those taking part will have the chance to secure a share of £275,000 equity investment.

The contestants, who represent a wide range of sectors and are based throughout the UK, are made up of 40 trading companies and 10 ‘ones to watch’ and were drawn from the highest number of entries since the contest was set up in Bristol in 2008.

Among those competing is Ed Dowding from Bristol-based Sustaination which has created, a business-to-business food trade network. 

During The Pitch Live, the business owners will pitch live on stage to judges Karen Darby, serial entrepreneur and founder of, Duane Jackson, chief executive of software company KashFlow and Charles Carter from ICAEW.

At the same time, investors Martin Bowles from Horatio Investments, Ben Heald from Sift and Gustavo Trujillo from Heron Capital Partners will observe those competing and decide who they would like to back with the £275,000.

The price includes all-day entrance and food and drink plus access to the live pitching, several business workshops and a pop-up shop featuring independent Bristol retailers organised by The Bristol Shop.

In addition, the cost of the ticket will be returned to delegates as Bristol Pounds, Bristol’s local currency which can be spent with hundreds of businesses in the city.
