Job description

We are a B2B creative technology business that believes every conversation matters. We create interactive customer experiences to simplify complex ideas, processes and services to make decisions easier. We are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of experiences, creativity, and technology to drive meaningful human interactions.

Design Thinking is our methodology and we value Simplicity, Bravery, Drive, and (above all) Being Human. Our philosophy and values drive our team to deliver the highest quality in our work and in creating experiences that transform customer engagement, delivering the results that matter for our clients.

We work with forward-thinking global brands and are looking for a junior to middleweight front-end developer to join our team.

You’ll mostly be coding in JavaScript, HTML and CSS to turn user flows, wireframes, ideas and design concepts into the front-end markup and scripting that form the immersive web applications we’re known for.

We generally create:

PWAs (progressive web applications) in Vue JS
SPAs (single page applications) in Vue JS
Responsive static sites in HTML, CSS and JS

There is some flexibility as to current experience and junior candidates who haven’t had the experience to cover all of the below should not be put off as we are looking for the right attitude above all. An appetite for excellence and enthusiasm for the type of work that we do, these attributes are just as important to us and you’ll also be working closely with our Technical Lead who will help and accelerate your learning and development.

Within a typical project, your focus will be on creating components and views that will involve a wide variety of content and data, often consumed from an API, multiple relational data structures, state management, offline storage, interactive SVGs, WebGL 3D environments, and complex interactions between UI, UX, data, and functionality.

Our apps are often focused on large format touchscreens (HD, 4K) but also need to work on mobiles, tablets and desktops, which provides unique challenges and great opportunities for creativity. As such, all your front-end code will need to be responsive and support multiple screen sizes, carefully and deliberately, and we use a utility-based atomic approach to CSS, powered by Tachyons or Tailwind, which facilitates efficient team working, collaboration, quick onboarding and overall better DX.

We usually create the CMSs and APIs that feed content into our apps, often powered by Kirby or WordPress, so if you have some PHP and backend skills, server management or DevOps experience, or anything related to the deployment and operation of websites and apps, that will be relevant too.

You’ll be part of a small but growing development team of three and working closely with designers and PMs to realise projects to the highest standards. To be a valuable member of the studio you’ll need to push boundaries and be ahead of the game on the latest technologies and innovations, and you’ll be given the creative freedom and time to achieve this. You’ll get all the training, mentoring, and development you need, both personally and skills-wise.

You’ll be working on live projects from the start - being a part of initial conversations with our clients, helping with concepts and prototypes, to developing the final experiences with interactions both physical and digital, animation and motion.

Person specification

We are looking for experience in the following areas – we don’t expect you to know all of the below (you’d be a genius if you did!) but this is where we’d like to get you to in your journey with us:

  • Sound knowledge of JavaScript, HTML and CSS
  • Building apps with Vue JS (or React or Angular or Svelte)
  • Building responsive websites or apps
  • Experience implementing responsive layouts with Flexbox and CSS Grid
  • SVG manipulation in JavaScript
  • Experience with WebGL and Three JS
  • Web animation and Greensock
  • PHP, MySQL, GraphQL, CMS
  • Experience managing Linux servers and Linux command line

You’ll also need:

  • To be able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Work to deadlines and manage your own time
  • Have good communication skills and confidence, to work with colleagues and explain your ideas
  • A passion for solving complex problems and overcoming challenges
  • A desire for simplicity always over complexity
  • Be excited by new technologies, and how they can be used to create meaningful experiences for people

Part of the package….

  • Full training and the best mentor
  • Competitive salary (based on experience)
  • Pension
  • Adhoc bonus (incl financial & extra holiday)
  • 22 days’ holiday (plus bank hols)
  • Day off for birthday and an extra couple of days over the festivities
  • Training and development fund

Out of lockdown!:

  • Agency outings, evenings and ‘research’ trips
  • And, most importantly of all, we have a pool table and a beer fridge!

So, if you’re up for this exciting role with huge potential, please send an up to date CV, with a covering letter, telling us a little more about yourself, your interests and what you could bring to the role to holly@popcomms.com.
