Pervasive Media Studio Lunchtime Talk: Digital Hat

Where: Pervasive Media Studio, Watershed, 1 Canon's Road, Bristol, BS1 5TX

When: 18 May 2012 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Digital Hat - an experiment in revolutionising how we discover and pay for live performance with Seth Honnor and Hannah Nicklin. We're interested in a "digital hat" that might combine the function and pervasive technologies of cards like Oyster Card and loyalty schemes like Tesco Club Card with mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets to create a box office function that is flexible, mobile, and responds to the needs of people on both sides of the gifting and receiving transaction. The outcome could enable users to give and receive donations towards a specific product through common technologies such as phones and cards wirelessly and securely, and share data and value between the gifter and receiver. We're interested in content discovery and recommendation too. There's a quiet but important revolution happening to music via platforms such as last.fm, songkick, and bandcamp. Our interactions through these platforms are beginning to develop genuine conversations about ownership and value, all alongside better and more connected recommendations. We'll begin with a lunchtime gathering where we both talk a little about where we are up to with our thinking, and then in the afternoon and running into the evening we'll convene a round table discussion with some good, disruptive, and exciting thinkers, developing the points from the presentation. It will be very informal, and start at 1pm to allow those who are travelling from afar to make it. Bring your lunch and eat while we're talking and as it turns towards evening we'll make sure there's wine and snacks; because we're also aware that some brilliant different thinking can sometimes come in the context of the latter (snacks that is). The day will finish when we've all had enough, gone home, caught our trains... These Lunchtime Talks are part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week. Do you want to find out what is going on at the Pervasive Media Studio? Are you interested in meeting our residents, talking about a specific project or curious about pervasive media? Why not pack a sandwich and join us for one of our Lunchtime Talks and Open Studio Friday. Lunchtime Talks are informal presentations by Studio residents and associates. They normally take place at 1pm on Friday, are free and open to everybody who???s interested in what we do. After the Talk, we also invite you to stay with us for the afternoon to continue the conversation or work on your own projects. We provide chairs, tables, wireless and a great space. You bring what you need to work with (laptop/mobile). Our open afternoons close at 5pm. Let us know if you???d like a tour of the space and we'll be happy to show you around!
