SUMMARY:An Eye for Fashion at MShed
DESCRIPTION:Reflecting a pivotal decade in the emancipation of women and the fashion that celebrated this new independence, ‘An Eye for Fashion’ captures a dynamic era of British social history and documents the work of the designers who laid the foundations of the modern fashion industry, as seen through the lens of Norman Parkinson, one of the foremost photographers of the day.
‘An Eye for Fashion’ is a collaboration between the Angela Williams Archive (AWA) and Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives, featuring around 60 rare and original vintage prints taken from an important collection of over 200 images that comprise the AWA’s ‘Designers of British Fashion’ portfolio. The exhibition opens on Saturday, 21 January, 2012 and runs until Sunday, 15 April, 2012. A programme of events, talks and workshops will accompany the exhibition.
Complementing the photography will be a selection of 1950s and 1960s ephemera, including high street fashion and other objects from the museum’s own collections. These exhibits will provide a vivid context for the photography and invoke a sense of nostalgia for this fascinating era of rapid social change. The exhibition provides a window into the work of the great British photographer Norman Parkinson, whose work spanned six decades of the 20th century.
During the peak of his career, from 1945 to 1960, Parkinson was employed as a portrait and fashion photographer for Vogue, and from 1960 to 1964 he was an Associate Contributing Editor of Queen magazine. From 1964 until his death in 1990 he worked as a freelance photographer. The Angela Williams Archive is a collection of original vintage prints by Norman Parkinson, dating from 1954 - 1964. The AWA regularly curates themed exhibitions and engages in a range of projects to promote Parkinson’s contribution to British photography. Angela Williams enjoyed a creative collaboration with Parkinson when she worked as his assistant in the early 1960s, before going on to enjoy her own successful career as a photographer, and has spent the past decade carefully cataloguing and researching the archive to preserve Parkinson’s legacy.
“These prints represent one of the most creative periods of Parkinson’s career, but most of the images have not been published or exhibited since they were first taken, so it is very exciting to be able to bring these works to a new audience,” says Angela Williams. “Parkinson always claimed he was a working photographer not an artist, but with the passage of time these photographs have gathered substantial artistic and historical significance, and the images now transcend their original purpose. He was the first fashion photographer to take his models out of the stuffy confines of a studio into the real world, where he captured their natural beauty with his trademark mix of realism and wit. Parkinson’s innovative yet meticulous approach ensured there was always a touch of magic in his work; he did not merely document, but also influenced, the Zeitgeist.”
Julie Finch, head of Bristol’s Museums, Galleries and Archives, adds: “We are delighted to have ‘An Eye for Fashion’ as our major spring exhibition at M Shed. This will be our first jointly curated show, bringing together rare vintage photography and fascinating objects from our collections to reveal the glamour and style of this exciting era.”

SUMMARY:Pervasive Media Studio Lunchtime Talk: Designing with Fiction
DESCRIPTION:‘Design fiction' describes ways of using storytelling techniques, especially in the form of video, to make speculative design ideas feel real. Sam Kinsley offers some insight into uses of design fiction drawing on his extensive research into the relationship between technology development, time consciousness and future prediction.

The talk explores how technology designers employ design fictions as a form of prototyping but also highlights how these ideas frequently bleed into cinema and popular fiction. There are established links between technology companies and film studios, and there is a long history of ‘science advisors’ in Hollywood, but more recently there has also been a growth in ‘vernacular’ video depictions of future technology. As computer scientist Paul Dourish asserts: ‘science fiction does not merely anticipate but actively shapes technological futures through its effect on the collective imagination’. This talk offers examples of 'design fictions' and works through some ideas about how design fictions can be created and how they may be useful to experimenting with pervasive media.

This Lunchtime Talk is part of Open Studio Friday, which takes place at the Studio every week.

SUMMARY:Pervasive Media Studio Live Broadcast: An evening with Robert Wilson
DESCRIPTION:“1 HAVE YOU BEEN HERE BEFORE”
“2 NO THIS IS THE FIRST TIME”

An evening with Robert Wilson. A Live broadcast to the Pervasive Media Studio from the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester.

In this exceptional performance, director and artist Robert Wilson invites you into his astonishing aesthetic universe. Combining hundreds of striking images from through his prolific career, Wilson provides an intimate self-portrait of his creative process.

Mr. Wilson references his landmark original works for the stage such as Deafman Glance, A Letter for Queen Victoria, Einstein on the Beach (created with composer Philip Glass), the CIVIL warS, and The Black Rider, as well as his acclaimed work for the operatic and theatrical repertoire including his luminous stagings of Madame Butterly, Wagner’s Ring Cycle, The Magic Flute, Ibsen’s Peer Gynt and Heiner Mueller’s Quartett. In particular Wilson will focus on his creation of The Life and Death of Marina Abramović which premiered at the Manchester International Festival in July 2011.

About Robert Wilson
The New York Times described Robert Wilson as “a towering figure in the world of experimental theater.” Wilson, born in 1941 in Waco Texas, is among the world's foremost theater and visual artists. His works for the stage unconventionally integrate a wide variety of artistic media, including dance, movement, lighting, sculpture, music, and text. His images are aesthetically striking and emotionally charged, and his productions have earned the acclaim of audiences and critics worldwide.

Wilson’s awards and honors include two Guggenheim Fellowship awards (’71 and ’80), the nomination for the Pulitzer Prize in Drama (’86), the Golden Lion for sculpture from the Venice Biennale (’93), the Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize for lifetime achievement (’96), the Premio Europa award from Taormina Arte (’97), election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters (’00), and Commandeur des arts et des lettres (’02) among others.

Together with composer Philip Glass, he created the seminal opera Einstein on the Beach. With productions such as Deafman Glance, KA MOUTain and GUARDenia Terrace, Life and Times of Sigmund Freud, CIVIL warS, Death Destruction & Detroit or a Letter for Queen Victoria he redefined and expanded theater. Wilson’s collaborators include diverse writers and musicians such as Susan Sontag, Lou Reed, Heiner Müller, Jessye Norman, David Byrne, Tom Waits, and Rufus Wainwright. Wilson has also left his imprint on masterworks such as The Magic Flute, Wagner's Ring Cycle, Madama Butterfly, Dreamplay, Per Gynt, The Threepenny Opera, Shakesepeare’s Sonnets and Krapp's Last Tape.

This performance will be streamed live to the The Pervasive Media Studio. It is part of State of the Arts the annual Arts Council England conference, with a programme of performances curated by Manchester International Festival in partnership with Cornerhouse, Whitworth Art Gallery, The Hallé and the Royal Northern College of Music.

SUMMARY:Pervasive Media Studio Lunchtime Talk: Introduction to Plonk – a framework for audio software development
DESCRIPTION:Plonk is a new C++ framework for audio software development by Martin Robinson in the Department of Computer Science and Creative Technologies at the University of the West of England, Bristol. Plonk was designed to support teaching and research activities at the university but is being made available to the wider community using a permissive open source license. This talk will introduce the current state of the project and outline its future plans. Plonk’s aims are to be:

• easy to use in the first instance;

• usable for prototyping; and

• scalable for audio application development (including mobile apps, audio for games and so on).

Plonk comprises building blocks for audio processing (e.g., oscillators, filters) and ways to interconnect these processes into more complex graphs. Plonk is multi-platform, currently running on Mac OS X, iOS and Windows and the intention is to support other platforms in the future.

SUMMARY:Frankie Owens - The Little Book of Prison A Beginner's Guide
DESCRIPTION:Meet the Author Event at Hydra Books
A Beginners Guide is the award winning book by ex prisoner Frankie Owens. Written during his time behind bars, the book aims to be the little helping hand that first time offenders might need as they enter the system.
Frankie Owens wrote The Little Book of Prison, A Beginners Guide to help future inmates, their families and loved ones to help make sense of what they would all go through when someone goes to prison. He writes from his own experience as a prisoner living at Her Majesties Pleasure.
The book won the 2011 Koestler Platinum award for non-fiction http://koestlertrust.org.uk/ judged by Will Self. “Our awards judges don’t give a Platinum Award lightly, and this book is a winner on more than one level. It is a practical and totally frank introduction to real life in the British prison system – probably the best introduction there is. But it is also a wonderfully human narrative and a sharply argued critique – the wit and wisdom of one inmate who turns out to be a born writer. I was gripped from start to finish – roared with laughter one minute, winced with pain the next, and was left wondering why we have prisons at all.”

SUMMARY:Skills2Film Camera Craft Workshop - Foundation
DESCRIPTION:Overview:
Awestruck? A bit nervous when you open that camera bag or are told that tomorrow you might be shooting? Don’t worry we have all been there. Ok, it was a few years ago with me but let me tell you how I got around it.
Training – every day at the BBC I was learning, watching others do it, having a go myself, always learning. On this workshop we will lead you through the beginnings of shooting, the gear and basic techniques. And don’t think the knowledge won’t be useful in the future.
I have just been filming a wonderful HD series on the Natural History Museum for the BBC, and the lessons I learnt years ago about lenses misting up, came in very handy when we were filming exhibits in the Museum’s freezers!

Topics include:
• Life on the road - your part of a team.
• Getting you started; an introduction to a camera.
• Setting up your viewfinder, from bars to zebras.
• What is back focus?
• Timecode - what is it actually for?
• The lens: What is it? How does it work? What is an f stop?
• Basis lens operation - changing exposure and focus.
• Depth of Field - basics explained.
• Light: how to use and control it. What is mixed light?
• Colour temperature explained.
• Getting to know and work with contributors.
• Logistics; tape labelling, rushes, battery charging.
• Posture and holding the camera correctly.
• Shooting a basic dialogue scene.
• Holding a shot long enough, panning smoothly.
• How to shoot buildings and landscapes.
• Basic handholding technique. Walking backwards!
• Condensation and your lens misting up!

What experience you might have had beforehand:
We are not as concerned with experience, at this stage, as a general keen interest to learn. You might well have your eye on a job vacancy, or want to attend our Intermediate level workshop at a later date. But at this stage getting the basic knowledge is the most important.

What job this workshop might help you apply for:
The fact that you have a basic grounding in camera craft cannot be underestimated. Apart from the job applications that will now be available, fundamentally you have begun to give yourself a skill that will provide the bedrock for your shooting career to come.

Who has attended this type of course?
Production Coordinators and Managers, those starting off in the industry who want to shoot, Journalists who want to re train with a new skill.

SUMMARY:Train the Trainer
DESCRIPTION:Train the Trainer
The need for skilled trainers continues to grow as our workforce meets the challenges of changing technology and information. Acquiring new knowledge and skills is critical to your job success and ongoing professional development.
Some workers may be able to walk onto a job and get their hands around it immediately, but for most new employees, training is necessary. That is why trainers are important! It is the trainer’s job to ensure that employees have the knowledge, ability and confidence to tackle their new job.
It is important also to realise that any trainer needs two separate sets of skills and knowledge. First, they need to know the topic they are teaching (subject matter expertise). Second, they need to know how to transfer that information to their fellow employee (instructional expertise).
This workshop is designed to build on delegates’ existing skills, in design and delivery of training programmes and introduce them to best practise methods of delivery and learning retention.
Subject areas to be included: Defining the learning objectives and outcomes required including training needs analysis Design and delivery of the training programme Methods of deliver using visual, auditory and kinaesthetic techniques Ensuring learning retention using behavioural science methods such as Neuro Linguistic Programming, Emotional Intelligence and Psycho Cybernetics for motivation. Role play with two training exercises to test planning and implementation Monitoring and evaluating the success of the training Action plan for future development
Great training leads to the following positive results: Employees perform their jobs with more confidence They learn more quickly They work more accurately They get along better with other employees They’re more capable of training other employees They work better in teams Since things are easier for them at work, they have more job satisfaction; and they are more likely to stick with the job longer They are much more likely than other employees in the same position to master their job well enough to be promoted later
By using different techniques to meet the individual needs, trainers ensure that the proper message is conveyed to their listeners. The Train the Trainer Workshop is not a goal, it’s a result. The goal is to become the best trainer you can be!

SUMMARY:Effective Conflict Management Training
DESCRIPTION:Conflict is inevitable, but it can be reduced and turned into something positive. The interpersonal conflicts we experience on a daily basis at both from the large organizations to a tiny corporation. Conflict shifts people's focus away from work and the basic goals of the team, department and organization. It negatively impacts productivity, morale and ultimately the results. The most important skills needed for managing employee relations are interpersonal communications and conflict management skills.
No one likes to deal with conflict, but the truth of the matter is that we must. Problems that aren't dealt with tend to become septic and spread into other areas and relationships. Conflict Management Skills can help in resolving employee relations issues quickly and more effectively, and can create greater satisfaction with the workgroup. Surveys show that managers now spend about 20 percent of their time on conflict resolution. And, as employees are asked to communicate with a greater variety of people, they need their own conflict management skills. Most of us are less skilled at handling conflict than we should be. Although studies show that a negotiating behaviour is usually the best response to a conflict situation. The challenge is to recognise potential conflict and learn to use effective skills to manage it to reach a satisfactory outcome for you, the other person(s) and your organisation.
During this one day workshop on Effective Conflict Management you will look at the best practise skills for dealing with these challenging and emotional situations.
Delegates will learn how to:
Understand what Conflict Management actually is and how it manifests itself in their workplace
 Differentiate between conflict and confrontation
Analyse the different conflict management strategies, their particular preferences and which style would be more appropriate in particular circumstances
How you can create further conflict if you don’t handle the situation effectively
Use logical or emotional language as appropriate to the situation
Tackle conflict in its earliest stages to prevent it becoming too large to handle
 Effective listening skills
Disordered management style and issues exacerbate the conflict because the communication gets distorted and people become frustrated in a workgroup. Managers should always address up difficult situation and speak up. Effective listening skills convey information properly. Listening what the person says, and responding to the conversation on a positive way reduces workplace conflict. Conflict of any type creates some type of emotions such as anger, frustration, and sorrow. Managing these emotions through respect and careful manner can establish a good relationship with the workplace. With all these techniques improve your conflict-management skills that will go a long way in fostering positive employee relations with a workforce
This one day workshop is designed to equip you with the skills and give you the confidence to deal with even the most challenging situations.

SUMMARY:Appraisal & Performance Management Training
DESCRIPTION:Appraisal and Performance Management
One of the most difficult tasks a manager has to perform is that of staff appraisal. Agreeing to the objectives of staff appraisal as well as making effective use of staff appraisal can improve the performance of your business. A well designed system of appraisal can help you in assessing your staff and give good constructive feedback as well as praise them for their good work. It is also a chance to further clarify the objectives of the company and the employees.

A good appraisal should motivate your employees. So how can you make appraisals effective and powerful sources of staff motivation?

During this one day workshop on Appraisal and Performance Management you will look at “managing” as a process that is ongoing; one that focuses on helping people develop their day-to-day performance.

Delegates will learn:
To set SMART objectives and targets for individuals based on organisation needs
How to monitor, measure & assess individual performance on ongoing basis, e.g. use of observation and other means of tracking performance
Coaching and feedback skills that can be used on regular basis, e.g. Assertive Push for giving balanced feedback and constructive criticism and how to coach an individual to get them to give feedback to themselves.
The concept of Internal & External Referencing in relation to how much praise and affirmation an individual needs.
How to run an effective performance appraisal interview, what preparation should be done by both parties, what to focus on during an interview
What makes performance appraisal conversations challenging?
How can we get around these issues and make every performance appraisal a positive experience?
Give effective feedback & handle difficult messages
 Set achievable goals and expectations
 Support other people's development
 Build confidence and morale
 Set effective boundaries
Know what to do when the goal posts change
An Appraisal & Evaluation form to suit you
 Tools for day-to-day Performance Management
It will help you to provide direct reports and enable you to help develop the skills and confidence of the person being appraised. It will enable you to give honest feedback and not avoid awkward issues.
At the end of the day, a well planned and run appraisal meeting can have a powerful motivational impact on your staff.

SUMMARY:Producing Creative Campaigns Seminar
DESCRIPTION:South West Regional Group Seminar: Producing Creative Campaigns

Programme
Creativity is the magical ingredient which can make the difference between an average communications campaign and one that exceeds its objectives and truly delivers against the bottom line. But what is a ‘creative’ campaign and how can charity communicators use creativity to support their work? In this seminar we will listen to two South West charities that have used creativity to problem solve, reach new audiences, stretch budgets and amplify messages, to excellent effect.

Lucy King, PR Manager at Bristol Zoo will talk about Bristol Zoo’s 175th Anniversary Wow! Gorillas campaign. Aimed at inspiring civic pride and engaging communities, this led to a Bristol art trail showcasing a host of gorillas funded and created in collaboration with local businesses, charities and artists. The campaign generated unprecedented on-line buzz while capturing the hearts of Bristol’s community and tourists alike.

Natasha Collins-Daniel, Education and Media Manager at ERIC (Education and Resources for Improving Childhood continence), a national charity based in Bristol, will talk about ERIC’s recent Banish the Wee Horror campaign. Despite limited resource, this campaign exceeded objectives and went on to win Gold in the not-for-profit category at the 2010 CIPR PRide awards and the Small Charity, Big Achiever Award at the 2011 Third Sector Excellence Awards.

The voluntarily run project, directed by Antria Pelekanou (co-director of ‘Persona Art Festival’ and chief curator of ‘A Moving Exhibition’) will run from 3-17 March 2012 at the Nails Gallery in Bristol city centre. With leading institutions such as Spike Island and Arnolfini boosting Bristol's art scene, we aim to invite artists from all over the globe to visit Bristol, showcase their artwork, and further enhance the vibrant scene the city has to offer. There are many free annual cultural events held in Bristol such as the Bristol Balloon Festival, BrisFest and Open Studios at Jamaica Street Artists to name a few. We believe that The Door Prize will be a great edition to the calendar, providing the public with an exciting opportunity to get involved with the arts. All visitors to The Door Prize group exhibition will be encouraged to vote for their favourite painting on the opening, guaranteeing an engaging and entertaining experience.

The works will be selected by a combination of the judging panel and the public vote. The winner of The Door Prize will receive an award specially commissioned from London based artist Desiree Ickerodt, and a Solo exhibition. Along with the prestige of being the winner of the first Door Prize, the winner will also be given a rare opportunity to become actively involved in the judging process of The Door Prize 2013. In addition to the winner, there will be two runners up who will both receive a free designed publication including a selected part of their portfolio. One of the two runners up will be commissioned to create the 2013 Door Prize award.

In a celebration of painting as one of the most recognised and respected art forms, the competition opens the Door to the public and there can only be one winner.

So...come along and get involved!
