Paul Appleby, Bristol Media Chairman

No Description   Paul has been a member of the Board since 2005, and took up the role of Chair in April 2009. He is the Director of VID, a media consultancy also set up in April 2009 after he left the BBC Natural History Unit (with a BAFTA award…). Paul’s aim is simple – to help make Bristol a vibrant centre for all forms of media that’s recognized around the world for its innovation, lifestyle and creative buzz. His consultancy work portfolio includes BBC Future Media, SWRDA, Bristol Natural History Consortium and Media Trust, and follows 20 years as a series producer, working on multiplatform projects since 1999.

Mike Bennett, Placemaking Director, Bristol City Council

Mike Bennett Mike has been part of Bristol Media for 6 years. Helping to drive the network forward, originally as Chair in 2006-08. He was appointed CEO in 2008 and held the position until August 2010 when he left to become Placemaking Director at Bristol City Council.

Mike is the co-founder, of digital agency E3 which employs over 50 people working out of Bristol and London studios on a variety of digital marketing and web projects for the likes of BBC, Sony, Triumph Motorcyles, Kia Cars, AXA, COI and other Government agencies. Mike is a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Bristol (where he was once a student) and at UWE, on business-related subjects, including entrepreneurship, risk management and start- up.

Mike is a founder member of the Bristol Ambitious and Prosperous Partnership board and a non executive director of several media and creative companies. He was named Bristol Business Person of the Year 2007.

 Caroline Marshall, Bristol Media Manager

Photo Caroline’s career began as a Researcher working in daily live television at the BBC. She became a TV and Radio Producer specializing in music programmes and produced live radio and documentaries at Radio 2 in London. She moved to Bristol in 1999 to become the Event Manager for the BBC’s Millennium Music Live Festival. She has since produced and written podcasts and GPS driven mobile media content for clients in the tourism and heritage sectors such as The Scottish Arts Council and The National Trust. Caroline joined Bristol Media in 2007 and manages the day to day activity of the 3800 member network.

 Chris Thurling, Managing Director 3Sixty

Chris Thurling Chris is Managing Director of digital marketing agency 3Sixty, which is based close to the University in Clifton and was established in 1995. 3Sixty’s largest local client is Bristol Airport. The agency also works with a number of clients outside the area including Deutsche Bahn, Denplan (part of AXA) and Birmingham Airport.

Over the years Chris has been involved in various regional initiatives. He was Chairman of the Bristol Chamber of Commerce eBusiness Club, a former Bristol Board Member of Young Enterprise, a former Vice-Chairman of the Trustees of contemporary arts venue Spike Island, a member of the West of England Initiative and a graduate of the Common Purpose Programme. Chris is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a member of the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) Digital Creative Group, and an occasional lecturer at Bristol University on digital marketing.

 

Gill Sandford, Associate Dean – Enterprise, University of the West of England

  Gill is the Associate Dean, Enterprise in the School of Creative Arts at the University of the West of England, Bristol. She is also the Head of the Bristol School of Animation based at UWE. She has been a member of the Bristol Media Board since mid 2007.

Prior to her current role, Gill was Head of School of Communication Design and Media at UWE. This gave her the opportunity to work with colleagues and students to develop key links with a significant number of media companies in the region and build relationships that support collaboration to develop UWE’s media education and respond to the needs of the industry.

Gill represents the education sector on the Bristol Media Board and is able to bring in information from her networks and membership of regional and national groups. She is working with a small sub group of the board to identify and respond to the developmental needs of BM members by setting up a range of professional skills training and support.

Lis Anderson, MCIPR, Director, JBP Public Relations

 

Photos  A PR consultancy practitioner for 18 years, Lis has held senior positions at some of the UK’s leading independent and integrated consultancies including Bray Leino, Seal Group and Corixa Communications working with regional, national and international brands, businesses and organisations.

She is a Director of JBP Public Relations, the South West’s largest independent PR consultancy and one of the UK’s top 150, and is also a partner in a specialist marketing, PR and communications training business Talking Heads, a business that was developed to specifically bring quality affordable training to the South West.

Lis was appointed to serve as Chair of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) West of England from 2004 to 2008 where she successfully grew membership year on year and championed a number of initiatives including a graduate mentoring scheme, PRide Awards and the Young Communicators Conference. She now sits on the regional committee councils for CIPR and the Public Relations Consultants Association, supporting membership initiatives.

Fraser Bradshaw, Managing Director, McCann Erickson – Bristol

 

No Description Fraser is managing director of McCann Erickson in Bristol and a Board Director of the McCann Central Group, with offices in Bristol, Birmingham, Dublin and London. With over twenty years’ industry experience, he started his career in marketing with ICI in 1987. Formerly head of planning for McCann Bristol, he has been managing director since 2003, restructuring the agency to generate significant business growth. Fraser is an active member of the IPA and the Digital Network for McCann EMEA and has responsibility for McCann-i, the digital arm of the McCann Erickson in these regions. He has worked both client and agency side on UK and global brands and is a strong advocate of integrated marketing.

Felicity Kelly, Managing Director Duttons Design

 

 Felicity Kelly   Felicity Kelly is Managing Director of Duttons Design.  An Economics graduate from UCL, she started her career with Edelman International PR agency, before moving into client side marketing with British Airways, responsible for International markets and premium brands, including the launch of Club World and then First Class brands. She eventually returned to consultancy, joining Brand Union (then Enterprise IG) as a senior consultant, specialising in Brand Identity and Corporate Change programmes.

A few years later Felicity jumped off the career ladder, setting up her own agency and making the Design Week Top Thirty within four years. Following a strategic merger eight years later, and four years of rapid growth, the combined company was eventually sold to the WPP Group and she retired to the calm of the Somerset levels.  After a breather, she joined Dutton Merrifield as caretaker Managing Director in 2004, went through a sale, short lived merger, and subsequent management buyout, to form Duttons in January 2008.

Duttons is one of the South West’s leading brand agencies, with a 20 year+ track record of effectiveness.

Felicity oversees the Design sub group

Fiona Marsh, Head of Production Tigress Productions

Fiona began her TV industry career in the Natural history Unit at BBC Bristol and for ten years worked across all types of television productions and programme genres. Fiona then went freelance and has worked at many of Bristol’s Independent Production companies.   As well as wide-ranging experience in TV Production, Fiona has a keen interest in post production as well as Stereoscopic 3D.  She has also moved into Design and Animation, has produced commercials, worked as a Digital Effects producer and project managed 3D CGI at BBC and worked in CGI at Aardman Animations. Most recently she was Head of Production at a digital effects company working on a feature film.   
 
Fiona re-joined Tigress as Head of Production in February 2010 having worked there previously as Production Manager on many projects and also as Production Executive in Development.  Tigress Productions specialise in adventure, natural history and survival documentary programmes working in extreme locations and producing many co-productions for US channels as well as UK based channels.

Graeme Fearon, Partner and Head of Intellectual Property, Thring Townsend Lee & Pembertons, Adviser to the Board

  Graeme Fearon 

Graeme is head of Intellectual Property at Thrings and his workload covers an equal amount of litigation and commercial work. He also works closely with other lawyers in the firm, especially in the Commercial and Corporate Finance teams.

With a particular interest in brands, Graeme advises brand-owners on setting up, maintaining and protecting their brand portfolios. This includes helping them file for trade mark and design registrations and taking appropriate enforcement action against infringers. He also advises businesses on how to protect and exploit their technology and know-how and has significant experience working with patents, software and rights in information.

Graeme has developed a further specialism dealing with clients in the media sector, including traditional print publishers, film production houses and Web 2.0 content providers. Graeme helps them identify and protect the intellectual assets which are the cornerstone of their businesses.

Graeme read Law at Cambridge and then trained and worked in the City for 12 years before joining Thring Townsend in 2004. He has a Diploma in Intellectual Property Law and Practice from Bristol University and is regularly invited to speak and write on IP matters.

 Steven Coombe, Partner Burnside Chartered Accountants, Adviser to the Board

 

 Photo Steven is a partner at Burnside, Chartered Accountants. Steven acts as an adviser to the Board of Bristol Media and looks after a portfolio of clients primarily in the owner-managed sector.

 

Ian Cooper, Director, Smith & Williamson, Adviser to the Board   

No DescriptionIan is a director at Smith & Williamson (Accountants & Business Advisors) and heads up the Media Team in Bristol. Ian acts as an adviser to the Board of Bristol Media and his team look after a portfolio of clients ranging from entrepreneurs and SMEs to large corporates. Ian looks after the finances and management accounts for Bristol Media and is the first point of call for members’ queries on accounting, tax and finance.
