One Lazy Journalist Can Get the Rest into a Heap of Trouble

The power of the internet is increasing by the day, where bloggers can now lead the news agenda with ease and a minimal amount of spend on infrastructure. Gone are the days that you needed 100s of employees and a huge printing press to be heard. Also I have written before about blogging’s power of being able to influence journalist’s story ideas or tone of article. Indeed apparently “78% of journalists 78% of journalists the USA rely on blogs for story ideas!

Bearing the above in mind, a lazy journalist seems to have fallen foul of basic journalist principles of always triangulating the source of a story or rumour. The offending spoof story was used as “linkbait” (spoof story to drive traffic to a website) and was regarding a 13 yr old boy and his spending habits with his dad’s credit card. He apparently used the credit card to purchase ladies of the night to play with him on his XBOX….

I have seen this tabloid story do the rounds on the internet which was originally “seeded” (planted on a blog / social networking site to be picked up virally) on the Digg site and soon gained a popular following, then managed to get picked up on the “Credit Card site. money.co.uk

One has to seriously questions the ethics of this type of SEO and whether it is moral at all. As a PR, you would risk serious damage to a client’s reputation if you were to carry out such an act. However, I find it intriguing how the media hunts in packs and once one reputable resource publishes a factually unsound story the remainder jump on the bandwagon.

Following the money.co.uk article, Fox News, The Sun, Metro and Radio One have all published the story, so it just goes to show how media has trust in its peers as well as the internet now too!

As the council colours change yet again and in fighting continues down on College Green, isn’t it about time that Bristol made plans to elect its own Mayor to drive the city forward?

All we need is a petition of 4000 people to instigate an election?

Sky One pulled out all the stops with a brand-new Sunday evening schedule dominated by the return of classic gameshow Gladiators. LWT produced the original Gladiators for ITV1 between 1992 and 2000, and the show quickly became a family favourite. The new incarnation is produced by Shine, and features Ian Wright and Kirsty Gallacher as hosts, together with an all-new troupe of muscle-bound gladiators. However, one crucial element remains: John Anderson is back as the referee, having featured in all of the eight original series. Sky One gave the new series plenty of pre-launch publicity, and it all paid off as the first episode attracted 1.5m (11.6%) between 6-7pm to give an incredible TI™ score of 518. This first episode was then repeated at 10pm, where it picked up a further 393,500 (2.5%) and a TI™ score of 382.

Five introduced a new entry into the tried and tested genre of fly-on-the-wall police docs with Police Interceptors at 8pm. This new six-part series from Raw Cut Television (who also make Road Wars for Sky One) is faster paced than most programmes of its ilk as it follows the work of an elite police task force set up in Essex. The unit is equipped with some of the quickest cars available and staffed by some of the force’s best drivers, and also boasts its own helicopter to help catch criminals. These programmes have long been a favourite with viewers, and Police Interceptors was quick off the line with a debut audience of 1.2m (5.6%) giving an above-average TI™ score of 148.

A new title entered the highly competitive Thursday 9pm slot, in the form of the three-part drama from Carnival Films, Midnight Man, starring James Nesbitt. A dark (literally) drama, about a journalist with a morbid fear of daylight who becomes caught up in a murderous government conspiracy, Midnight Man attracted an audience of 3.81m (18.1%), giving a slightly below-average TI™ of 91.1. This performance was still strong enough to win the 9-10pm timeslot, in which the competition includes The Invisibles (15.3%) on BBC1, Heroes (12.6%) on BBC2, House (8.3%) on Five and, over on Sky One, Bones, which attracted a multichannel audience of 444,800 (2.4%) and an excellent TI™ of 164.

Kevin McCloud puts himself in the firing line this week in Talkback’s Grand Designs Live, by taking on a live challenge to build an eco-friendly home in six days. This is an interesting departure for Grand Designs, and the launch programme, at 8.05pm on C4, attracted an audience of 1.9m (7.9%). While this does not approach the heights of some of the Grand Designs ratings, (the previous series, which started in January 2008, averaged over 4m viewers), it was a solid performance up against Raiders of the Lost Ark on BBC1, (5.2m, 22%), and ITV1’s drama offering at the same time.

The anniversary of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann is nearly upon us, and ITV1 marked the occasion with a two-hour documentary, featuring an interview with Kate and Gerry McCann, who talked about the night their daughter went missing. There is still a certain fascination with the details of the McCann case, as the programme averaged 3.5m (14.4%), with a TI™ of 107.6, across a lengthy two-hour slot. This compares well with the Channel 4 Dispatches programme, Searching for Madeleine, which went out in October 2007 and was watched by 3.3m (14.6%).

Monday 28th April 2008
BBC1 launched a new soap at 2.15pm: Out of the Blue, a BBC commission from Australia’s Southern Star that focusses on thirty-something friends in the beach resort of Manly. The series opened with a murder at a school reunion, and then followed the effects as they rippled through the group. The double episode attracted an audience of 1.16m (17.6%), enough to win two-thirds of its slot, and beating fellow Aussie soap Home and Away on Five, also at 2.15pm.
