No DescriptionThe Bristol based artist Ruth Ander will explore Somerset's 'Coastal Light' in a new exhibition at Colston Hall this September.

Inspired by the light and drama of the North Somerset Coastline from Clevedon to Brean Down, Ruth creates unique and evocative prints on fine tissue and Japanese paper. By applying very thin layers of ink, her work emulates the delicate, subtle play of light on the water and has the finished texture and translucency of an old Italian fresco or a Japanese woodblock print.

A selection of her ethereal one-off prints will be exhibited throughout September in Colston Hall’s gallery The Glass Room.

Ruth said "My inspiration comes from coastal areas in the south west so I hope that visitors to my exhibition in The Glass Room will relate to and recognise their own memories and reflections of well-loved places in my work."

“With the huge numbers of people coming through Colston Hall’s foyer every week, The Glass Room is one of the highest profile exhibition spaces in Bristol. Colston Hall has a strong track record in supporting musical talent in the city, and with the widening creative industries agenda it makes sense to use our space to help local artists showcase their work,” says Colston Hall’s marketing manager Sarah Robertson.

The Glass Room is curated in partnership with the Love Local which runs the Made in Bristol project. Made in Bristol aims to showcase the artistic talent the south-west has to offer by providing affordable retail opportunities for designer makers in the region including the high-profile art and craft fairs at Colston Hall. This year the Made in Bristol Gift Fair is on 10, 11 and 17 December.

The Glass Room curator and Love Local director Bryony Morgan said: "The Glass Room is a fantastic platform for local artists and we are really excited about continuing the Made in Bristol and Love Local ethos of supporting local artists by facilitating quality exhibitions at the Hall."

The Coastal Light preview will take place on Thursday 1 September between 6pm-8pm.  All are welcome to come along and be the first to see Ruth’s work. The exhibition will then be open to the public daily from Friday 2 September until Sunday 2 October 2011.

The Glass Room is open from Monday to Friday 8am - 11pm and Saturday 9am-10pm (in quieter times space may close early). On Sundays Colston Hall is only open when an evening show is on.
