Win an iPad in Grand Pier Video Competition
The Grand Pier has launched its first big competition of the year. The Pier owners are looking for short video entries to host on their main website. The winning video, which must be no longer than five minutes, will be used as the official ‘User Created Grand Pier Video 2011’ and the winner will receive an Apple iPad plus £100 worth of Grand Pier ride vouchers.
All entrants have to do is upload their video onto a video-sharing site like Youtube and send the link to social@grandpier.co.uk with the subject heading ‘Video Entry’. Physical copies of the file will not be accepted.
The Grand Pier cannot accept links via Facebook, Twitter or Youtube pages. The only way to enter the competition is via email.
There are no entry requirements other than owning the copyright to everything in the video. It can be about anything – for your favourite ride to your day out on the Grand Pier.
Pier owner Kerry Michael said: "I want to see the Grand Pier through our visitors’ eyes and to find out what they like the best about our new Pavilion. I want people to come along and whip out their phone or digital camera and create a video. The top entries will be hosted on the Grand Pier’s official Youtube page".
Weston-super-Mare’s Grand Pier was bought by brother and sister Kerry and Michelle Michael in February 2008. They immediately began investing millions of pounds in the seaside attraction, including installing a brand new 300 metre long Go Kart track.
On 28th July 2008, just a few short months after the Michael family had taken over, disaster struck. people watched in horror as the Grand Pier's Paviliion building was engulfed in flames.
Immediately after the fire, which razed the building to the ground in just an hour and a half, the Michaels’ held a Press Conference. They announced to the World’s media that they were going to re-build the Grand Pier and turn it into a 21st Century attraction.
Now began the enormous task of removing the 700 tonnes of twisted steel that was all that remained of the Pavilion. The owners wasted no time in appointing an architect and in early December 2008 a planning application was submitted to North Somerset Council.
The Pier owners travelled the world seeking out the best rides to install in the new attraction. They wanted to create an indoor theme park that would be open all-year-round. The old Grand Pier used to close in October and re-open in February, to coincide with school holidays.
After just over two years of long, hard work the Grand Pier re-opened its’ doors to the public on 23rd October 2010. Thousands of people queued from 4am to be the first to see what was inside the Pavilion building. Over 300,000 people visited the Grand Pier in the first week of opening.
Inside the new Pavilion building visitors were greeted with 16 brand new rides. The 300 metre Go Kart track is back, plus a thrilling Robocaster ride, a double Helter Skelter and a Side Winder pendulum ride.
The Grand Pier contains some world-class rides and attractions, but it also includes some of the old favourites, like the Ghost Train and the Dodgems.
The Grand Pier has been transformed into a futuristic attraction. There are a total of 27 shops, bars, and restaurants, including an Edwardian tea room, with stunning sea view on three sides.
The Grand Pier is now able to host concerts for up to 3,500 people and provide conference and banqueting facilities. There are also some stunning wedding venues to choose from, with views over Weston Bay or out over to the Welsh hills.
So, help celebrate the success of the new Grand Pier by creating your own short video. The competition is open now and will close on Friday 22nd April at 9pm.
