Skills2Film

Skills2Film in association with the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Film, TV and Radio Studio present a series of new, highly topical workshops for the broadcast industry, the corporate company and individual alike.

Jeremy Humphries an award winning Director of Photography and highly respected cameraman from Bath, with over 26 years experience in the industry, has pooled together some of the most experienced professionals in the business to offer a broad range of training in all aspects of video and film production techniques, for both professionals and non professionals alike.

The company Skills2Film, which is based in Bath, offers bespoke and scheduled camera craft and production skills workshops to anyone wanting to learn more about the art of filming whether they are already in the industry, a corporate company expanding into the use of video or an individual simply wanting to know more. The company has developed a ‘Reel of Experience’ involving other highly respected practising professionals in their areas of expertise including presentation, directing and location managing skills and also offers bespoke courses for specific individual or company requirements.

Skills2Film is the first training company of its kind to be set up in the West of England and is working towards becoming a centre of excellence in the UK. All of the tutors, including Jeremy, are working professionals who will have been out on a shoot one day and then holding a workshop the next. Jeremy Humphries’ experience in broadcasting is extensive and ranges from filming observational documentaries such as ‘Cutting Edge’ for Channel 4 and ‘Britain From Above’ for BBC2, to entertainment features such as ‘The F Word’, ‘Ladette to Lady’, ‘Secret Millionaire’ and the BAFTA winning ’Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares’.

His team of experienced tutors includes: Paul Appleby (Chair of Bristol Media), the company’s multi platform consultant, who is a BAFTA winning producer with over 30 years experience at the BBC, including 20 years as a Series Producer of TV and multi-platform projects in the Natural History Unit; Joanna Cross, Skills2Film’s Communications Skills Expert who was a network newsreader and presenter on news programmes and award winning documentaries and has over 33 years experience in the industry; and Maggie Ainley, the company’s Location Manager Consultant, who during a 25 year television career has worked on a vast range of small and large scale productions, lately as a Location Manager and Production Manager. She also ran the Bath Film Office from 1999 to 2008.

The first three training courses will all take place at Christchurch Studios in Clifton, home to the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School Film, TV and Radio Studio and are as follows:

  • Working Multi Platform, delivered by Paul Appleby; 15th May
  • Shooting on Location, delivered by Jeremy Humphries; 22nd May
  • Pitching and Presentation Skills; 29th May.

Bristol Media have negotiated a special discounted rate for members of £150 + VAT for each of the courses.

Jeremy Humphries has been successfully offering bespoke training courses in camera craft and production skills to both broadcast and corporate clients over the last two years and he has seen the need for film skills grow sharply with the explosion of multi-media platforms. A recent survey carried out by Skillset (The Sector Skills Council for Creative Media) and published in the first ever National Strategic Skills Audit on Wed 17th March 2010, highlighted the growing need for training and the increasing gap in skills in the creative media industries. “We have tapped into an obvious growing demand for camera and production skills in Bath and the West of England. Many forward thinking broadcasters and corporate companies are now keen to benefit from our rich seam of expertise that will keep them one step ahead of their competitors.” Jeremy Humphries, MD Skills2Film.
