Young people head Knowle West for fun this summer

Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) is delighted to announce its Summer Programme for August 2009: a fortnight of exciting interactive workshops for young people aged 10 to 16.
The two-week programme, aspects of which have been shaped in response to young people’s suggestions, will run from Monday 3rd August until Friday 14th August and culminate in a free day of celebration to which all are welcome. Nine themed workshops will be taking place, twice daily, ranging from digital and media-based activities to arts, crafts and animation. All are interactive and are supported and facilitated by experts.
A 3D model map of South Bristol will be raised above the paving stones outside KWMC then filmed and digitalized, to produce an interactive webpage highlighting ‘safe’ and ‘unsafe’ zones within the area. A digital eco den will also be erected, made from renewable materials, which will contain a designated video games space powered purely by cycling and sunlight! Manga artist Rory Doona will be leading a workshop in the Japanese art of illustration where young people can learn freehand drawing and then transfer their artwork onto a computer and learn how to colour and manipulate the images.
The Performing Arts Workshops will be ideal for young people wanting to experience the diversity of the arts. A professional performer will assist them in developing their own acts, from acting to stand up comedy, and these will be showcased in a performance at the end of the programme. Young people can also produce video diaries, construct and test their own kites and, on the Thursday of each week, join the Avon Wildlife Trust on an outdoor excursion to discover the ‘mini beasts’ – insects – lurking in the area.
There will also be the exciting opportunity to test some of the latest technology developed by Hewlett Packard in Bristol. As part of the M-Scape GPS Mapping workshop, young people will collect images, videos and sounds on a walk around Knowle West and learn how to transform these media resources into a cutting-edge digital map that can be used on a personal digital assistant (PDA). The Summer Programme will utilize the versatility of the media resources available at KWMC: digital technology will be used to deliver, enhance and document the range of creative activities on offer.
KWMC are excited to be welcoming young people from across Bristol to enjoy a fortnight of summer fun and invite anyone aged 10-16 to contact them and get involved!
