Smith & Williamson’s 5-a-side team made a good account of themselves by taking the Bristol Media Cup after not one, but two, tense penalty shoot-outs.

S&W winners

Despite torrential rain earlier in the day, Clifton College Sports Centre was bathed the now-traditional sunshine for the tournament, which featured great performances from newcomers and established teams alike. After 2 years of impressive performances, Smith Williamson finally took home the cup, beating newcomers Epoch by penalties after the game finished 2-2.

They were also taken to penalties in the semi-finals by Team Rubber, (apparently fresh from The Land of the Giants), whilst Epoch triumphed over 2007 winners Radio Bristol to reach the final, and also played their 7th game of the tournament with no substitutes – testament to their fitness, passion, grit (and shortage of players?).

Landscape action shot

The arrival of the 6 referees (like a scene from “the Magnificent Seven – only six…) heralded a truly sporting spirit, and there was also a great turn out of supporters. They were rewarded with both a lovely afternoon in the sun and, a total of 228 goals, including an 11-0 victory by VID in the “wilting stages” of the group rounds. There was also some great music from Tessa Bickers and Al O’Kane and competitions for the kids and spectators organised by Mick at Riot Events. Thanks too go to Project Graphics and Towergate Insurance for providing Champagne for the winners.

All the action of the afternoon was captured by Luke Hazell and Andrew Letten on HD as part of Bristol’s bid to be a host city for the 2018 World Cup. The film was edited overnight by Steve White and delivered to the Bid team for the first inspection visit on July 13th. Hopefully the success of our little tournament will go someway to securing the world’s greatest football competition for the city…

In the meantime – roll on 2010!
