Wallace and Gromit

Wallace and Gromit are celebrating their 20th anniversary this November (some of you may have seen the Culture Show last night ..repeated at the week-end and on i-Player) and it was the Bristol Animation Festival in 1989 which launched their career when Grand Day Out was shown alongside films like John Lassetter’s Tin Toy.

For two decades they have been the stars of British and world cinema and television in the now classic films A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, A Close Shave and The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, three of which won Oscars. Wallace is possibly the greatest innovator since Brunel, has done more for cheese sales than any marketing campaign, and both are official international UK icons.

But much has changed over 20 years. What have Wallace and Gromit contributed to British and world culture, and how have British and international economic, cultural and political changes affected them? What about their impact on the North of England, Lancashire and on Bristol? Who inspires them and who have they inspired?

Aardman and the Festival of Ideas invite you to join a panel of speakers including Sir Christopher Frayling for an evening of clips, talks, discussion, fun, laughter and debate to celebrate their 20th Anniversary on 3rd December from 7pm at Explore @Bristol.
