The Euro 2008 football championships came to an end on Sunday with live coverage of the final between Spain and Germany on BBC1. The BBC coverage ran from 6:55pm – 10:15pm, averaging 8.8m (37.1%) to give an above-average TI™ score of 142. The actual match coverage averaged 10.6m (41.5%) between 7:45pm – 9:45pm as Spain triumphed 1-0, remaining fairly consistent with 10.8m (45.6%) for the match coverage of the 2004 final between Greece and Portugal.

Music fans were in for a treat on Friday evening as the BBC covered day one of Glastonbury on BBC3 and BBC1, and ITV1 brought viewers the Nelson Mandela tribute concert from Hyde Park. BBC3’s Glastonbury coverage started at 7pm with music from Editors, the Fratellis and Estelle, averaging 345,000 (1.9%) between 7pm and 10:30pm. This was around 100,000 down on the channel’s coverage in the same slot last year. BBC1’s coverage continued from 11pm – 2am, with American rock band Kings of Leon as the headline act. The slot averaged 467,960 (6.9%), compared to 488,400 (7.7%) last year.

Andy Murray’s first appearance at Wimbledon 2008 gave the BBC’s tournament coverage a boost as the hopes of a nation rest on the shoulders of the young Brit. His match against Fabrice Santoro went on into the evening, with Murray finally triumphing during BBC2’s live coverage between 5:50 – 8pm. The programme averaged 2.9m (16.4%) to give an excellent TI™ score of 228, with a peak quarter-hour audience of 3.8m (19%) at 7:30pm as Murray battled to win the third set
