ITV1’s Friday evening sitcom slot came to an end last night as both Benidorm and Teenage Kicks ended eight-part runs. The second series of Tiger Aspect’s Benidorm has gone from strength to strength. The final episode drew an audience of 5.7m (25.7%) to give an excellent TI™ score of 198, bringing the average for series two to 5.6m. Sitcoms are notorious for taking a while to bed in and Benidorm has been no exception. The first series averaged a respectable 4.2m (20.5%) in 2007, and the second series has built on this to make Benidorm a jewel in ITV1’s schedule.

Thursday night at 9pm continues to be the place for major new drama, with The Invisibles on BBC1, Midnight Man on ITV1 and House on Five. All three shows are gaining fairly consistent audiences week-on-week, with House coming in third place with 1.5m (7.1%), which is average for the channel in this timeslot. Neither of the two large terrestrial offerings have managed to gain a clear lead: The Invisibles had 3.3m (15.2%) and Midnight Man 3.5m (16.2%), neither showing a significant drop-off in audience from last week.

Gordon Ramsay was back in business on Channel 4 last night with the start of a fourth series of Optomen’s Ramsay’s F Word at 9pm. The food magazine mixes recipes, celebrities and foul language into a winning formula that has proved a firm favourite among Channel 4 viewers. The new series will feature a celebrity and their family staffing Ramsay’s kitchen each week, while Janet Street-Porter will be rearing two veal calves that will be destined for the chopping board by the end of the series. The third series of Ramsay’s F Word averaged 3.6m (16.3%) last year, and this fourth season got underway with 2.4m (10.7%) between 9-10pm to give a TI™ score of 90.
