David Tennant returned as Doctor Who for a new 13-part series on BBC1 at 6:20pm, and this time his sidekick takes the unlikely form of comedienne Catherine “Am I bovvered?” Tate. This is Tennant’s third season as the Time Lord, with his second series averaging 7m (37.5%) on BBC1 last year. Initial signs suggest that this latest series could prove even more popular as 8.4m (39.4%) tuned in to episode one, giving a TI™ score of 156. This in turn helped the following episode of talent show I’d Do Anything to average 6.8m (30.3%) between 7:10 – 8:20pm, up on last week’s 6.2m.

Channel 4’s Cutting Edge documentary The Human Spider detailed the life of legendary free-climber Alain Robert, who famously (or perhaps infamously, if you are one of the many international police forces who have had to arrest him) climbs skyscrapers, bridges and other man-made structures without ropes or safety gear. The documentary followed Robert as he travelled the world climbing (usually illegally) some of the world’s tallest buildings, and audiences managed to hang on too with 2.5m (10.8%) watching, earning the show a TI™ of 148.9.

Channel 4 gave viewers a dramatisation of Clare Allan’s bestselling book Poppy Shakespeare on Monday evening. The author was herself confined in a mental hospital for ten years, so she was well equipped to write a story about a girl on a psychiatric ward determined to prove her sanity. Naomie Harris played the lead role in Cowboy Films’ small-screen adaptation, with Anna Maxwell Martin playing the part of ‘N’, one of the wards’ long-term patients. Poppy Shakespeare attracted an audience of 1.3m (6%) between 9:00 – 10:45pm, giving a below-average TI™ score of 69.
