Television Highlights w/c 24th September 2007

Saturday 29th September 2007 The final of BBC1’s The World’s Greatest Elvis proved to be a bit of a damp squib, attracting just 3.8m (19%) between 7 – 7:45pm. This was only a slight increase on the 3.4m (17.8%) who tuned in for the start last Saturday. It couldn’t compete with the might of ITV1’s The X Factor (6.8m and a 36.1% share between 6:05 – 7:15pm) or Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway (7m and a 33.4% share between 7:15 – 8:30pm). With The X Factor entering its ‘boot camp’ stage, ITV1 aired a second episode at 8:30pm, averaging 7.1m (31.3%). This didn’t have too much impact on Casualty, with the BBC1 medical drama attracting 6m (26.6%) this week compared to 6.5m (30.1%) last week.

Friday 28th September 2007 England scraped through to the last eight of the Rugby World Cup on Friday evening with a vital 36-20 win over Tonga, and ITV1 had all the live action between 7:30 – 10:30pm. The programme averaged 5.4m (25.2%), an increase of 1.9m over the match between France and Ireland that aired in this slot last week. The match kicked off at 8:00 and reached a peak audience of 6.6m at 8:30pm. The reigning World Champions now face a tough test against Australia, which is bound to be good news for ITV1 following some mediocre audiences during the group stages

Wednesday 26th September 2007 In the unfortunate event of a pest infestation most of us would look for Rent-a-Kill in the Yellow Pages, but it seems a few people elect to call Anthea Turner instead. In BBC3’s new three-part series Help Me Anthea, I’m Infested! she travels around the country with pest controller Mark Coltman ridding homes of their unwanted guests. It’s hard to imagine that particular programme pitch being made, and as Anthea squared up to an army of cockroaches she must have wished she was back fronting ITV1 travel show Wish You Were Here…? The first episode of Help Me Anthea, I’m Infested! averaged 253,600 (1.4%) for BBC3 between 9-10pm.
