September is starting well for Bristol-based tv indy, Calling The Shots), with new commissions from ITVWest and the BBC, the acceptance of two of the films it facilitated into the Co-operative Young Film-makers Festival, and a place in the finals of Encounters 2007 for team member, Harriet Fleuriot.
The first of the two tv commissions is for a six-part series, with the working title, ‘Severn Stories’ looking at the social and natural history and traditions of the UK’s longest, largest and, possibly, most tempermental river – the River Severn. The series will be presented by Marty Jopson (previously seen on What the Romans Did For Us and Brainiac, among other shows) and is due to t/x in January 2008, on ITVWest and Sky.
For the BBC, CTS is making a programme following two bands – one from Worcester, the other from Aberystwyth – on their way to hi-fi glory at the Camden concerts to be held in October as part of BBC Electric Proms Introducing… The film will show how they won through to the finals of the BBC’s music talent competition via regional heats and a set at the Glastonbury Festival.
In addition to broadcast programming, CTS also works on a range of community and education projects, including the recent Gallery 37 scheme with which several Bristol Media members got involved. Now, two of the films made with children from Brenty Primary School, Bristol, and a similar school in Chilcompton, have been accepted for the Co-operative Young Film-makers Festival, at the National Media Museum, Bradford, on October 12 & 13.
Both schools made films about climate change and democracy, and will be sending young representatives to take part in the festival.
Meanwhile, CTS team member, Harriet Fleuriot, has another festival in her sights. Her film, ‘A Short Collection of Hilary Flamingo’s Dream Vocations’ has won through to the finals of the Encounters Short Film Festival, taking place in Bristol from 21 to 25 November. The short was produced by CTS with funding from the UK Film Council and support from South West Screen.
